Chinese photospies have made a pictures of the preproduction version of the MG GS compact crossover SUV which “live” presentation is scheduled for auto show in Shanghai at April 2015.
Born in the UK car brand MG Motors, now owned by the Chinese company SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), informally introduced its first car class SUV – crossover MG GS. Who makes rhe MG GS car?
New MG GS is a sports crossover, which is built on a SsangYong Korando platform (officially the Chinese call it “platform SSA”) from SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), which owns the brand. By the way, according to Chinese media, versions MG GTS car will get rear suspension, similar to the one that is placed on the Volkswagen Tiguan. However, nothing strange in such borrowing, because SAIC is a technical partner of the German company, through the assembly of cars in Shanghai. Such borrowing was made possible because from 2004 to 2009 SAIC had stock in SsangYong. It is also interesting, by latest rumors MG GTS suspension is actually a modified edition of the Volkswagen Tiguan suspension, which for the local Chinese market is produced at the Shanghai Volkswagen venture, where SAIC has 50% share in the authorized capital.
MG GS Specifications
It is already known that the SUV will get the engine lineup consisting of turbocharged engines of 1.5L and 2.0L. 1.5L unit develops 167 HP and 250Nm of torque, and a two-liter – 220HP and 350Nm.
The engines are aggregated with six – and seven- speed robotic transmissions, which the automaker calls DCT. Presumably, the gearbox provider is a Getrag company, which six-speed gearbox is installed on the Qoros brand cars.
MG GS design
MG GS design style is basing on MG CS design concepts, shown in 2013. That, in turn, represented a development rather insane design of MG Icon prototype, demonstrated in the previous year.
Incidentally, it is worth recalling that during its presentation, the Chinese have promised to release a production model not only for local market but also in the European market, so it is possible that the assembly of the vehicle may soon start on the old MG plant in Surrey, England.
Main features of sporty exterior of the crossover will be the daylights on the LED elements, original wheels and numerous chrome elements.
By the end of 2014, the model was already shown online under the MG GTS name, and now a renaming series continued, SUV got the new GS label. Interestingly, according to the company official statement, the crossover has been registered in the China Ministry of industry as “GTS”, but on sale the model goes as “GS”. Fact that among Chinese autovendors such a constant renaming of the upcoming models practice is normal.
Article about the MG GS has been prepared on the basis of peer reviews and rumors from the Internet. The exact release date and the start of sales is unclear, but there is actual information.
MG Big plans
MG GS is going to be the first crossover of Chinese brand, but judging by the rumors, not the last one. It is reported that MG is developing a larger SUV, created based on one of the GM models. SAIC accesses this platform via a joint Shanghai-GM venture which produces, among other things, Buick GL8, Encore and Envision. Last and is considered a likely donor candidate.
MG GS Release date
It is planned that MG GS SUV sales to start soon after the premiere in April. Firs the model will be produceв for the Chinese market, and in the fall 2015 sales of SUV crossover will start in few other countries, for example, in the UK.
Release date: late 2015
MG GTS Starting price is 120,000 Yuan ($19.3 thousand). Top novelties configuration will exceed $25 thousand These prices by the standards of the Chinese public does not “sweet”, especially for local producers, but MG is positioning its new product as a crossover almost premium and emphasizes its stylish look and advanced technical content.
